Spring

The arrival of spring is marked by the blossoming of the plum and cherry trees.  In springtime, weather forecasts regularly include the dates on which the blossoms are expected to come out in different parts of the country.  Viewing cherry blossoms is a popular pastime.  Parties are held under the cherry blossoms
to celebrate the coming of spring.  This custom is called flower viewing (hanami).

Summer

The period from early June to mid-July is hot and very rainy.  The rainy season (tsuyu) is important for the rice crops.  The height of summer lasts from the end of this rainy season until the middle of September.  Except for Hokkaido, the weather is hot and humid.

Autumn

As autumn approaches, temperatures drop and the air becomes fresh and clear.  This is a lovely time of year because the weather is sunny and many trees change color.

Winter

During the winter months, the northern and western parts of Japan have heavy snowfall.  These areas have a variety of snow festivals.  The most famous is in Sapporo, Hokkaido.  Giant sculptures are made from snow and ice, and people from all over the world come to watch and take part.
